Background of the study
Digital language evolution is increasingly evident in Nigerian social media, particularly within Facebook group discussions where dynamic interactions foster rapid linguistic change. In these groups, users engage in sustained dialogues that reveal emerging trends, hybrid expressions, and innovative lexical constructions (Okoro, 2023). The asynchronous yet interactive environment of Facebook groups enables members to negotiate meanings, incorporate cultural references, and develop community-specific jargon. This phenomenon reflects not only the fluidity of digital communication but also how collective identity shapes language evolution. As users exchange opinions, share multimedia content, and comment on group posts, new words and expressions are coined, while existing ones acquire novel connotations (Ibrahim, 2024). Such evolution is influenced by factors like globalization, technological advancements, and the multilingual nature of Nigeria, where diverse linguistic repertoires coexist. Additionally, Facebook groups provide a space for grassroots communication that challenges traditional language norms and academic paradigms, highlighting the interplay between formal language structures and informal digital discourse (Afolabi, 2023). This study aims to capture these linguistic shifts, analyze the social mechanisms driving them, and assess their implications for broader communication trends. By focusing on Facebook group discussions, the research will contribute to understanding how digital platforms serve as incubators for language evolution, reflecting societal changes and cultural dynamism in Nigeria.

Statement of the problem
Despite the increasing relevance of digital communication in shaping language, there is limited empirical research on the specific linguistic transformations occurring within Nigerian Facebook group discussions. The spontaneous and informal nature of these discussions often results in rapid lexical and syntactic changes that traditional studies overlook (Chukwu, 2024). The lack of comprehensive frameworks to capture these innovations impedes our understanding of digital language evolution. Furthermore, the interplay between multiple languages in these groups complicates the analysis, making it challenging to trace the origins and impacts of emerging expressions. This study seeks to fill the gap by systematically examining language use in Facebook groups, addressing methodological challenges, and elucidating the socio-cultural drivers behind these changes (Adebola, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze the linguistic innovations emerging in Nigerian Facebook group discussions.
  2. To examine the socio-cultural factors driving digital language evolution.
  3. To assess the impact of multilingual interactions on language change.

Research questions

  1. What are the predominant linguistic changes observed in Facebook group discussions?
  2. How do social and cultural factors influence digital language evolution in these groups?
  3. In what ways does multilingualism contribute to emerging digital expressions?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comprehensive insight into the evolution of digital language in Nigeria, using Facebook group discussions as a microcosm. The findings will aid linguists, educators, and policymakers in understanding how digital communication shapes language, thereby informing strategies for digital literacy and cultural preservation (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study focuses exclusively on linguistic interactions within Nigerian Facebook group discussions. It is limited to analyzing language evolution on this platform and does not extend to other social media or offline communication practices.
